Oklahoma Waiting List Hits Record High

Across the country states have struggled with finding enough adequate housing for the rising number of individuals who need it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1 out of every 6 or 15% of children aged 3 through 17 years have one or more developmental disabilities and increasing the level of service for these individuals is becoming more challenging with the growing population. Since 2006, Oklahoma has seen an increase in the number of individuals on a waiting list for services and consequently an increase in the approximate wait length per individual. Currently the wait time is approximately 9 years and 8 months. The State Legislature has made efforts that have helped decelerate the wait list and in 2014 even reduced the wait. However, continued budget cuts caused the wait length to grow again. Services in provider-run community-based homes for developmentally and intellectually disabled individuals are paid for through state and federal funds. Currently, in order to receive services, the system is set up through a first-come-first-served process. Some provider agencies have shut their doors, unable to take on the influx of individuals. The sourcing and funding of community-based homes is a daunting prospect but options exist.
